"Orchids: Hidden Stories of Groundbreaking Women" unearths stories of women who accept enriched our agreement and appreciation of orchids. Despite their remarkable achievements in art, botanical analogy, orchid cultivation and scientific discovery, many of the featured women take not received the recognition they deserve. "Orchids: Hidden Stories of Groundbreaking Women" highlights these unsung horticultural heroines and solidifies their ongoing influence on orchid collections. Visitors tin see the showroom and its accompanying orchid display at the Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard, shared by the Smithsonian American Fine art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. Patrick Dougherty Stickwork Sculpture Installation

Located on the West Backyard in the gated outdoor gardens

In celebration of the U.S. Botanic Garden's 200th anniversary in 2020, the Garden has collaborated with renowned stickwork artist Patrick Dougherty to create a custom sculptural installation onsite. Dougherty'south installations are woven from constitute materials, and for this creation, the plants used include willow and invasive plants removed past USBG employees from two sites in the area -- U.South. National Arboretum and American Horticultural Society River Subcontract. The invasive plants harvested include Kingdom of norway maple, Siberian elm, and hybrids of non-native ruby. Volunteers and employees worked with Dougherty and his team over three weeks to create the unique installation. Visitors are invited to touch and explore this nature-inspired constitute artwork on the Lawn immediately west of the Conservatory.

The United States Botanic Garden featured an outdoor holiday display in 2021. Festive adornments, winterberries, lighted copse and shrubs, and conifers and greenery were placed throughout the Garden through Jan. ii, 2022, closed on December. 25. An outdoor train display was ready upward in the gated outdoor gardens during these dates between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Tickets not required. The Conservatory and restrooms remain airtight, due to the closure of buildings on the U.S. Capitol campus.

Plant Collections


  • Conservatory: The permanent exhibits in our Solarium will have y'all around the world all yr long. It houses collections of plants from subtropical, tropical and arid regions and showcases orchids, medicinal, economic, endangered and Jurassic plants. From tardily May to mid-October, the Solarium Terrace features thematic exhibitions.
  • National Garden: Our newest outdoor gardens, the National Garden features the Regional Garden of Mid-Atlantic native plants, the Rose Garden – all grown organically – devoted to the U.South. national flower, the Pollinator Garden, and the Commencement Ladies Water Garden.
  • Bartholdi Park: Bartholdi Park, a favorite "cloak-and-dagger" garden of Washingtonians, is across Independence Avenue from the Solarium. Here visitors will observe a tapestry of theme gardens surrounding the historic Bartholdi Fountain. The gardens propose interesting plants and innovative designs at a calibration suitable for the habitation mural.

The installation showcases how orchids have adapted to their many dissimilar environments and can be found on every single continent except Antarctica. Orchids: Amazing Adaptations is part of Habitat, a Smithsonian Gardens–wide exhibition exploring the importance of habitats and how nosotros tin help protect them.
